About the Vessel

Alverta is a 32′ long, five-log canoe built in 1908, probably on Kent Island by Walter Gardiner and Joe Thompson. Although log-built in a centuries-old tradition, she was motorized and never intended to sail. Because she is an excellent example of both log construction and the shift from sail to power on the Bay, she was donated to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
