Harriet Lane

Harriet Lane was named for President James Buchanan’s niece who acted as First Lady during his presidency. The ship was designed as a side wheel gunboat. In 1861 Harriet Lane took part in the battle of Fort Sumter, firing the first Navy shot of the Civil War across the bow of the steamer Nashville. She was converted to a blockade runner and later a merchant ship. She remained in commercial service until she was lost off of Pernambuco, Brazil in 1884.
HMS Beagle

HMS Beagle was a Royal Navy ship that carried out three survey expeditions in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The second voyage, from 1831 to 1836, was famous for transporting naturalist Charles Darwin, who developed his theories of evolution and natural selection based on findings and observations during this voyage.
