This is a model of the first USS Intrepid. It was a Tripolitan vessel (the Mastico) taken during the Barbary Wars by Stephen Decatur and used in a raid to destroy the captured US frigate Philadelphia in the harbor of Tripoli. Previously it had been used as a bomb vessel by the French during Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt, and prior to that it had been a typical Mediterranean merchant vessel.
The model was built without benefit of plans; it was based on a sketch made in 1804, descriptions in various historical publications, and rigging plans of ketches of the period. The hull design was based on that of an English bomb ketch of 1804, modified to mimic that shown in the sketch. It is finished in a weathered and worn condition as described by the crew.
