Alaska was to be the first of a class of 6 large cruisers for United States Navy. One more (Guam) was completed, but when the war ended the other four were cancelled. She was laid down on in December 1941, but not commissioned until June 1944. As this was late in the war, Alaska saw relatively limited service.
