Carvel

« Back to Glossary Index

Carvel is a method of hull planking in which the edges butt up against one another. Compare to lapstrake hull planking.

It is a “frame-first” method of hull construction, where the shape is determined by the set of frames onto which the planks are affixed. This is in contrast to “hull-first” lapstrake construction, where the planks are formed over temporary templates and later reinforced by the insertion of timbers fitted to the planks.
