About the Vessel

A flattie is a sloop-rigged, flat-bottom boat with some deadrise aft. Deadrise aft helps a heavy flat-bottom boat turn when sailing into the wind. They were used primarily for carrying produce on the Maryland and Virginia tidal streams, and to a lesser extent for oystering, crabbing, and duck hunting. They went out of popularity on the Bay in the 1890s. [American Small Sailing Craft, Chapelle, 1951, pp. 309-310]
